B vitamins

There are many B vitamins including niacin, riboflavin, folate, biotin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. B vitamins are important for energy pathways and to make sure that the mitochondria function properly. They are also required in detoxification pathways in the liver.

This has been used for children with autism due to its role as an antioxidant


Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that is required for every cell of the body. It is used to supply cells with energy, increase the absorption of other nutrients,  helps enzymes work to digest food properly, and reduces free radical damage


GABA is an amino acid produced by the brain and is known to have anticonvulsant and sedative effects. It is taken to reduce anxiety and stress, improve mode, and decrease ADHD.


It a found in corn, meat, citrus fruits and legumes. It has been shown to decrease panic disorder, anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, OCD, and insomnia. It is also used to treat diabetes and metabolic syndrome.


Magnesium is a mineral involved in over 300 cellular reactions in the body. Foods high in fiber are usually high in magnesium. Certain forms of magnesium can be used to treat constipation. Other forms are used to treat anxiety, ADHD, fatigue, and depression. It can also improve insulin levels and bone health.


Nutrient deficiencies are common in children with special needs and supplementation has been show to help replenish deficiencies and improve symptoms

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)

NAC is a power antioxidant that is a precursor to glutathione, the most power antioxidant in the body.  It is used in the detoxification system. Additionally, it has been shown to improve symptoms of irritability in children with autism.

Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil)

This is used to decrease inflammation, lower blood lipids, and treat ADHD and autism. It has been shown to improve cognitive function, behavior and hyperactivity. Omega 3;s are important for brain function and mental health.


The human microbiome is the bacteria, fungi and parasites that live in the GI tract. They aid the body with  absorption, metabolism, and the prevention of pathogenic colonization.   Probiotics are living microbes taken to modify the GI microbiome to  more favorable organisms in to decrease disease and improve health status. They take up space and compete with pathogens, and they also have a positive effect on the immune system. Special populations have been shown to have  GI issues, especially leaky gut, and probiotics can help alleviate symptoms.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a vitamin that comes from fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits. It is an antioxidant that protects against free radicals and pollutants. It helps support mitochondrial function and liver function


Theanine is an amino acid found in green tea and some mushrooms. It is used to reduce anxiety and stress and improve cognition.

Turmeric (curcumin)

Curcumin has been shown to fight inflammation, help the liver detoxify the body and help manage pain

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin found in fish, eggs, and fortified milk. It also can be in the body after adequate sun exposure. It has many uses in the body since it is found in almost every tissue of the body. It is especially important for gut function, mitochondrial function,  improved cognition, and hypothyroidism, and immunity.


Zinc is used for neurobehavioral development and improving immunity. In the diet, it can be found in red meat, poultry and fish. Research shows that special populations may have decreased immunity and  zinc can be used to heal the gut and prevent inflammation. Zinc is also involved in the production of neurotransmitter and neuroregulation


CBD Oil can reduce stress, lessen aggression, and decrease anxiety. Some people say it helps with hypersensitivity to physical sensations, noises and smells, but this has not been formally tested.
